Her family roots run deeply through Mi’kma’ki: her mother\, Gayda\, lived on the Cole Harbour Reserve alongside Martin's grandparents\, Pat and Lila Phillips\, and great-grandparents\, Charlie and Maggie Phillips (aka: the famous “Aunt Megâ€� who had a reputation for quiet\, persistent advocacy on treaty rights.)\nMartin first studied broadcast journalism and completed both an undergraduate degree and a Master of Arts in History. She then graduating in 2006 from AV¾ãÀÖ²¿ Law School with her LLB when her son James was only six weeks old. \nMartin spent over a decade as legal counsel for Millbrook First Nation\, though she is most proud of her work in negotiating a historic land claim for which a key piece of evidence was a letter written by her great-grandmother. Her work spans both grassroots advocacy and high-level policy.
