The Department of Legal Sciences was established in 2013 in the wake of the pre-existing Faculty of Law (created in 1924, the year of the foundation of the University of Florence). The Department represents therefore the continuation of the rich tradition of legal studies, that blossomed in Florence over a century ago.

The Department of Legal Science was recognized as one of the Departments of Excellence by the Italian Ministry of University, first, for the five-year period 2018-2022 and, then, confirmed for the period 2023- 2027.

The Department aims at providing, in an increasingly interconnected world, a reference for cutting edge study and research in the legal field, with a particular attention to the historical and theoretical dimensions, to comparison, and to developments occurring in case law and at policy level. The Department is the hub of an extensive research activity implemented by its members, often in connection with other research centers in Italy and abroad.
