President's message

A message from AV整氈窒's President andVice-Chancellor, Dr. Kim Brooks.

DAL MAGAZINE

As a centuries-old university, AV整氈窒 is always building on its rich history to remain relevant in the present and prepared for the future.

That is certainly true for Dal Magazine, debuting in 1984 and, for the past 40 years, serving as our flagship publication. Now, we build on that history with a new edition of the magazine designed to respond and adjust to the digital age.

The fall term saw a labour disruption on campus. Moving forward will take care and commitment, but I believe deeply in AV整氈窒 and in the people who make it such a remarkable place.

We have much to do together. Notably, in the coming months we will launch a new strategic plan to help steer us through whats to come. There will be more to share on that soon, but for now, I simply want to thank each of you who shared your experiences, opinions and ideas with me or a member of my teamwhether that was through a survey you completed by email, or through a conversation at one of the various meetings or events we hosted related to our strategic directions.

One thing thats been clear as weve been consulting with our community is AV整氈窒s impact across the province. AV整氈窒 is not simply in Nova Scotia, it is of Nova Scotiaa product of the geography, the people and the events that happen here.純

Dal alumni live and work in all parts of the province (and elsewhere in Canada and around the world), and students are also earning their Dal degrees outside of Halifaxand not just from the Faculty of Agriculture in Truro/Bible Hill. Weeducate nurses in Yarmouthand new this fall, began(our second satellite medical campus after AV整氈窒 Medicine New Brunswick). Plus, Dal has anoffice in Millbrook(a Mi'kmaw community), and researchers across the land and waterways. Additionally, Dals partnerships with businesses, government and non-profit agencies help the province grow and thrive.胼

Collectively all these elements combine to create Dals front porch. We like to think that our porch is broad, and beckons neighbours near and far to drop by for conversation, inspiration and opportunity. As youll read in Rolling out the welcome mat, Dals front porch is already quite well built, but that doesnt mean we cant expand and fortify it further. If there are other ways AV整氈窒 can welcome you in, or welcome you back, wed like to hear about them!
