Foundations of LeadershipÌý

The Foundations of Leadership program is a non-academic opportunity focused on engaging students to be active participants in their own leadership development during their time at Dal AC and beyond.Ìý

TheÌýFoundations ofÌýLeadershipÌýprogram offers a series of dynamic and engaging workshops designed to help develop leadership skills, connect with peers, and explore how to use leadership skills in the community.ÌýFoundations of LeadershipÌýis open to any studentÌýinterested in pursuing leadership opportunitiesÌýandÌýdeveloping their leadership skills and knowledge. Students must complete a minimum of 5 workshops to successfully complete the Foundations of Leadership program.Ìý

No prior experience or knowledge is required.

Workshop Description
Motivation and Project Management Through interactive discussions, hands-on activities, and practical examples, participants will gain insights into effective strategies for maintaining motivation and efficiently managing projects. Whether tackling coursework, group assignments, or personal projects, participants will leave with valuable tools to enhance their productivity and achieve their goals.
MySelf 101/Identity ExplorationÌý In today's dynamic and interconnected world, these skills are critical for building healthy relationships, managing stress, making sound decisions, and achieving personal and professional success.ÌýThrough interactive discussions, activities, and introspective exercises, participants will develop a deeper understanding of emotional intelligence and self-awareness, enabling them to navigate the complexities of university life and beyond.
Creativity, Innovation & Design This workshop is designed to empower participants with the skills and mindset needed to foster creativity, drive innovation, and embrace design thinking principles. Through interactive activities, real-world examples, and collaborative exercises, participants will embark on a journey to unlock their creative potential and apply it to various aspects of their academic and personal lives.
Understanding the Art of Public Speaking Whether you're a novice looking to conquer stage fright or a seasoned speaker aiming to refine your skills, this workshop is designed to provide you with valuable insights, techniques, and strategies to captivate any audience. Led by experienced communication experts, this interactive session combines theory and practice to help you develop a commanding presence, craft compelling speeches, and overcome the hurdles that often accompany public speaking. Access your full potential as a speaker while nurturing your personal growth. Join us to enhance your public speaking prowess, boost your confidence, and embark on a journey of self-discovery.

Digital Communication

This interactive and engaging workshop will provide participants with practical strategies and techniques to enhance their verbal, nonverbal, and digital communication abilities. Through a combination of interactive activities, discussions, and real-world examples, participants will develop the skills needed to express themselves confidently, collaborate effectively, and articulate their ideas with precision, supporting their academic journey and preparing them for success in a rapidly evolving digital world.
Active Listening In a dynamic learning environment, participants will delve into the intricacies of active listening, discovering how it elevates dialogue, nurtures empathy, and amplifies understanding. Through immersive activities and thought-provoking discussions, participants will learn how to engage more thoughtfully, empathetically, and attentively in conversations, leading to improved comprehension, better collaboration, and enriched personal connections. Participants will cultivate the ability to not only hear words but to truly connect with the intentions and emotions behind them, fostering meaningful connections both academically and personally.
Team Dynamics

Through interactive exercises, discussions, and real-world examples, participants will gain a deep understanding of the dynamics that drive successful teamwork and learn practical strategies for nurturing team development. Whether for academic projects, extracurricular activities, or future professional endeavors, this workshop empowers students to excel as team players and leaders.

Social Responsibility and Citizenship In an increasingly interconnected world, understanding the concepts ofÌýsocialresponsibility and citizenship is crucial for creating a better future. This interactive and engaging workshop will equip participants with the knowledge, skills, and motivation to becomeÌýsocially responsible individuals and effective citizens. Through discussions, activities, and real-world examples, students will explore the role they can play in addressing pressing societal issues.

Leadership in Practice

The Leadership in Practice program is designed for students motivated to deepen their leadership competencies, clarify their leadership interests, and to engage in formal leadership roles on campus or in the community. Participants in this program will identify their individual strengths and leadership goals through CliftonStrengths and completing a Leadership Action Plan, engage in cohort-based experiential learning activities and workshops, and engage in a cohort community-based learning project. Students must attend all workshops to successfully complete the program.Ìý

Leadership in Practice Workshops

Foundations of Leadership Workshop Schedule:

Workshop Host
Kick Off The Kick Off event provides participants with the opportunity to understand the Leadership in Practice Program and get to know their peers and have fun. Participants will be introduced to the Social Change Model of Leadership Development, Clifton Strengths and how this will support their leadership development and learning in the program. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on their leadership aspirations, start their leadership action plan, and discuss the community-based learning project.
Discovering Your Strengths Participants will explore their individual strengths using CliftonStrengths assessment tool. This session will help them identify their top strengths and explore how they influence their leadership style. We'll bridge the gap between their strengths and leadership goals, empowering them to leverage these for greater impact.
Personal Leadership:Ìý Ìý Student PanelÌý Ìý

High-Performing Student Leaders who have engaged in diverse campus and community activities will participate in a panel discussion with program participants. Student Leaders will discuss their personal leadership paths, the value of knowing their strengths and skills, setting goals, and the importance of leveraging support and resources. Participants will reflect on their own leadership interests, strengths and set goals to further their leadership engagement and learning.

Building Strong Teams for Community Impact This session will explore how strong teams and leadership are instrumental in driving successful community engagement. This highly interactive session will give participants the opportunity to see how their strengths combine in-action to reach a desired outcome. They will then build on these strengths by learning strategies for developing empathetic leadership and fostering supportive relationships that is essential for teamwork and community collaboration.Ìý Building on these insights, participants will utilize their Leadership Action Plans to develop a plan for the community project.
Civic Engagement and Social ResponsibilityÌý Through a series of activities, participants will develop the skills, knowledge, and mindset needed to act as Team Leaders during the upcoming service day. They'll gain a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities, including how to facilitate meaningful reflection to enhance experiential learning.Ìý Additionally, participants will explore civic engagement and social responsibility strategies directly relevant to the project's goals and objectives.
Community Engagement

This program immerses participants in a one-day, collaborative community-based leadership experience as part of the Dal Leads conference. Serving as Team Leaders, they'll guide a small group of peers through a community service project with a local partner organization. Throughout the day, they'll provide on-site support and lead a reflective activity to solidify learning.Ìý By leveraging their strengths and creativity, participants will address specific community needs while developing their leadership skills in a real-world setting. To solidify these learnings, participants will reflect on the day's accomplishments, challenges, and key takeaways, identifying areas for future leadership development.

Your Leadership Legacy Participants will reflect on their values and aspirations, identifying their personal leadership vision and goals, and how they align with community values. Additionally, participants will reflect on their leadership journey throughout the program, considering their impact on others and how they can continue to contribute to their communities beyond the program, through an arts-based activity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I Participate in the Leadership Academy?

This program provides students with an opportunity to build effective communication skills, develop their leadership potential and grow their understanding of advocacy by getting involved in the community. There is opportunity to parallel this program with your current involvement on and off campus.

In addition to the skills participants will gain through active participation in the Leadership Academy, each student who successfully completes either the Foundations of Leadership or Leadership in Practice program will receive:

  • a Student Leadership Notification of Completion,
  • recognition on their Co-Curricular Record (CCR), and
  • recognition at the Student Leadership Award Celebration in March.

What is the Excellence in Student Leadership Awards Celebration?

A celebration of student leadership will be held each year in March. Those who complete the program will receive their Notification of Completion at the event.

The banquet also celebrates those within the campus community by recognizing student leadership.  

Should I Get Involved in Volunteer Opportunities?

Students are also encouraged to find their own opportunities or participate in planned group volunteer activities. Students may also meet with the Student Success & Engagement Advisor to explore volunteer opportunities. 

Students may choose to participate in organized group activities or complete their volunteer work independently. Group volunteer activities may include:

  • Trick or Eat,
  • Truro Farmer's Market,
  • and other community event support.

If your independent volunteer opportunities involve working with children or animals, you may be required to provide a criminal record check or attend an animal handling session.

As a Truro Start Student, Only on Campus for 1 Year, Can I Still Get Involved?

Yes! Participation in the foundational leadership program is open to all students, regardless of year of study, or future university career goals. Students in the Truro Start program will be able to continue their leadership development in Halifax with theÌýLeadership Academy.Ìý

Is There a Cost to Participate in the Program?

There is NO cost for you to participate in this program. It isÌýFREE!

How are the Workshops & Events Communicated to Students?

The meetings, sessions, and events will be set at the start of term, but reminders and updates will be shared onÌýÌýand through the DalU App within the AC Student Group.ÌýÌý
