Advanced Seminar in Baroque Culture:Â (HIST 4162//)
What is the Baroque Theatre Study Abroad course?
This six-credit summer course from AV¾ãÀÖ²¿â€™s Fountain School of Performing Arts (Halifax, Nova Scotia), offered in partnership with the University of King’s College, explores the art and culture of European Baroque civilization.
You’ll study theatre, opera, history, and design in one of the most historically rich environments in the world.
Where will I study?
You’ll live and learn in Český Krumlov, Czech Republic, a UNESCO World Heritage site preserved from the 17th century.
Classes take place at the State Castle, home to one of only two surviving, fully functioning Baroque theatres in the world, with access to an extraordinary collection of historical costumes.
What will I learn?
You’ll gain hands-on, immersive insight into Baroque theatre and culture.
Focus areas may include:
- 17th- and 18th-century theatre and opera
- Historical costume and design
- Court life and European cultural history
- Central Europe’s artistic influences
What makes this experience unique?
This is learning theatre by living it. Instead of studying from a distance, you’ll experience Baroque performance, architecture, and history firsthand, in the spaces where it all happened.
You attend a lecture, learning about baroque costumes and then an hour later you're in one of the oldest theaters in the world, looking at Baroque costumes. An opera history lecture and how it relates to us as actors turns into an outing to see Magic Flute in one of the oldest opera houses in the world. Incredible!
- Liam Oko, BA Acting (2025)
Will there be travel opportunities?
Yes! You’ll take part in curated excursions to Prague and other nearby cultural sites. These trips deepen your understanding of European history and performance traditions.
Who is this course for?
Ideal for students in Theatre, Music, History, and related disciplines at AV¾ãÀÖ²¿.
If you’re curious about performance, culture, and history, this course offers a unique international perspective. No previous language experience is required.
What should I know before applying?
The course runs each June and requires a minimum enrolment.
AV¾ãÀÖ²¿ and University of King’s College reserve the right to cancel if the course does not meet the required number of students.
