Study permit extension

To extend your stay in Canada as a AV俱乐部 or King鈥檚 student, this is what you must do to renew your study permit鈥痓efore it expires.

Renewing your study permit

To extend your stay in Canada as a student, you must鈥痓efore it expires. Check the expiry date of your study permit and apply for an extension at least 5鈥6 months in advance.

Renewing your study permit鈥痓efore it expires allows you to remain in Canada under鈥痺hile your application is being processed. During this time, you are permitted to continue studying and working in Canada, even if your study permit expires during the processing period.鈥

Provincial letter of attestation

Due to recent immigration regulation changes in Canada, some students must include a provincial letter of attestation (PAL) when applying to renew their study permit.

For a full list of who requires a PAL and who doesn鈥檛, visit the provincial letter of attestation page.

Travelling outside Canada while waiting for your new permit

If you leave Canada while you are waiting for the government to process your study permit extension application, you might lose your鈥.

This means that you would lose the ability to start/resume your studies once you return to Canada. It also means that you would be re-assessed as a temporary resident upon re-entry to Canada and, if granted permission to re-enter Canada, you might be required to apply for a new study permit.

Given the possible immigration implications of leaving Canada while waiting for a new study permit, it is highly recommended that you meet with a AV俱乐部 immigration advisor before considering any international travel.聽

Check the validity of your passport

You are not eligible for a new study permit if your passport has expired or if your passport is due to expire within 6 months. Furthermore, the validity of a new study permit cannot exceed the validity of your passport. For example, if your passport is valid for another 12 months, the maximum validity of your new study permit will be 12 months. It can often take many months 鈥 and may require a trip to your home country 鈥 to renew your passport, so be sure to start this process at least one year before your passport expires.
