Mechanical Engineering (BEng)
Cars, spacecraft, medical devices, renewable energy systems — mechanical engineers design the machines that move the world. At AV¾ãÀÖ²¿, you'll build them in our labs and test them for real.

Mechanical engineering is one of the broadest branches of the engineering profession, and we'll help you master it at Atlantic Canada's #1 engineering school. You'll learn hands-on in our labs, gain paid co-op experience, and study on Sexton Campus in downtown Halifax.
You'll learn to test, analyze, and develop machines and systems, applying creativity across solid mechanics, thermofluids, and renewable energy. You could design cars, spacecraft, boats and bikes, build solutions for emerging energy industries, or adapt bio-mechanical equipment for physiotherapy, rehabilitation, and sport.
Labs are central here: you'll combine design, development and testing in term projects using testing machines, photoelastic equipment and strain gauges, then add paid co-op work terms with our industry and government partners.
Careers
Our graduates go on to become innovators and industry leaders across many fields: biomedical devices, manufacturing, vehicle design, renewable energy, and marine transportation. Wherever machines and systems are designed, mechanical engineers are needed.
You might start in design, testing, or production roles and grow into research and development, project management or technical leadership. With 90+ co-op partners, students often receive full-time offers before they graduate, and co-op work terms count toward the experience needed to become a licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.).
What you will learn
Your first two years build a strong, common engineering foundation in math, science, design and engineering fundamentals, on Sexton Campus in Halifax or the Agricultural Campus in Truro. You'll then move into mechanical engineering, going deeper into machine design, dynamics, fluid mechanics and thermofluids, with technical electives to focus your final year.

AV¾ãÀÖ²¿â€™s Mechanical Engineering Program gives you the chance to put theory to practice with a broad range of hands-on learning opportunities in new state-of-the-art facilities, combined with our co-operative education program.
Project-based labs
Labs are a core part of your education. You'll combine design, development and testing in term projects, using facilities that include testing machines, photoelastic equipment and strain gauge stations, and you'll learn to measure and interpret real test data.
Customize your degree
Tailor your BEng to your goals. Choose the four-year program or the five-year co-op stream, start your studies in Halifax or Truro, and use technical electives to focus on what interests you most, from biomedical engineering and robotics to solar energy and 3D printing.
Choose the co-op stream to add paid work terms, starting in third year and typically four months each, with our government and industry partners across Nova Scotia, Atlantic Canada and beyond.
You'll graduate ready to design and improve the machines and systems our world runs on, with hands-on experience from our labs and, if you choose co-op, a resume that already includes paid engineering work.

Minimum admission requirements
To be considered for admission to this program, you must meet minimum academic criteria:
- Completion of secondary school (Grade 12)
- Achievement of the minimum average for your program of choice.
- Completion of Grade 12 English (or equivalent course).
Admission to many AV¾ãÀÖ²¿ programs is competitive. This means that meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.
